Man fatally stabbed on Atlanta Beltline after argument, police say

The warrant says Hamby told him and another man to back up “before I stab you.” Investigators believe he stabbed Ramon Harris in the neck with a knife, Schierbaum said.

Harris died after he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, police said.

Hamby has been in and out of the Fulton County Jail on various charges since 2011, jail records show. Some of those prior charges have been dismissed, suspended or reduced to time served, jail records show.

He pleaded guilty in 2020 on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony and was sentenced to time served, conditional upon entry into a program, court records say.

Hamby now faces charges of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a knife in the commission of a felony in Sunday’s stabbing, the warrant says. He has also been charged with making terroristic threats against Harris and another man in the incident.

A high-profile search shook the city after a stabbing on the Atlanta Beltline in May. That incident was a random attack that left one woman dead and another injured before Jahmare Brown, who has been since been charged with murder in the incident, fled on a bike, the AJC previously reported.

Brown has now been formally indicted by a grand jury. He is set to appear at a plea and arraignment hearing in September, Fulton County court records show.

That attack led officials to try to quell safety concerns on the Beltline. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens made public statements at the time detailing the city’s safety measures in place on the path, including police bike patrols, an extensive camera network and extra lighting.

The police department’s cycling “path force,” which patrols the Beltline, responded quickly to the scene Sunday, Schierbaum said.

“We encourage everyone to continue to use the Beltline, report suspicious activity, and we’ll make sure the Atlanta Police Department is right there with you in these spaces,” Schierbaum said.
