Prices at the pump in metro Atlanta and across Georgia have soared since the start of the war with Iran at the end of February.

And as the summer driving season kicks off with Memorial Day weekend, motorists can expect to spend much more at the pump than this time last year.

A gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in metro Atlanta has been hovering around $4, up from about $2.91 per gallon a year ago Wednesday, according to data from AAA. To fill up a 20-gallon tank, motorists will pay about $80 on average, up from less than $60 a year ago.

The average price of a gallon of diesel, meanwhile, is more than $5 per gallon compared with about $3.45 a year ago.

The United States is a top producer of oil and has reduced its dependence on Middle Eastern oil over the years. Still, the Persian Gulf region is a major producer for the globe, and the turmoil has sent crude prices soaring.

The conflict largely shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a geographical chokepoint that connects the Gulf region to the rest of the world.

On March 20, Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law a 60-day suspension of the state’s gas tax. He has extended that gas tax holiday through June 3.

Here’s the latest on average fuel prices per gallon, according to AAA.

Editor’s note: Prices are rounded.
