After playing in just four games, Sean Murphy is sidelined again.
Murphy suffered a fractured left middle finger Sunday on a swing by Dodgers second baseman Hyeseong Kim that hit Murphy’s glove, and the Braves announced Tuesday that Murphy has been placed on the 10-day injured list.
Braves manager Walt Weiss said Tuesday that Murphy will be out at least two months.
“It’s a broken bone, so you’re looking at probably eight weeks, anytime there’s a broken bone at least, Weiss said. “Then you take into account you got to get back in baseball shape. So it’ll be some time.”
The 31-year-old Murphy returned May 4 from offseason hip surgery after missing all of spring training and the first month of the season. He was 1-for-14 at the plate with six strikeouts.
“He’s in a tough place, man. He’s been through it the last few years,” Weiss added. “I always talk about this, the thing that’s underestimated, I think, in our game, is how difficult it is to play well when you’ve missed a lot of time. Especially when you start missing a lot of time a few years in a row. It’s such a it’s such a difficult game to play in general, and such a game of feel that we see, even in the postseason, team takes five or six days off and they’re out of sync. Our game is just different that way. These guys are used to playing every single day.
“Murph has been grinding through that. And through it all, even when you know he hadn’t swung the bat the way you know he has in the past and the way we know he can, he’s been unbelievable on the defensive side. The game planning stuff is top shelf. The way he can slow down an inning for a pitcher having a tough outing is really, really good. He’s a he’s a servant leader back there and he’s brought a lot of value that way, too.”
To fill Murphy’s spot on the roster, the Braves signed free agent catcher Sandy León. León played in 10 games for Triple-A Gwinnett through mid-April, and he hit .118 in 34 at-bats. The 37-year-old León had since been playing for Saraperos de Saltillo in Mexico, where he hit .143 in 10 games.
León has played for seven MLB teams since 2012, including the Braves. He was 1-for-12 last season.
On May 4, the Braves designated catcher Jonah Heim for assignment before acquiring cash considerations from the Athletics in exchange for Heim. Heim was 9-for-39 with eight RBIs and five walks in 12 games with the Braves.
Also on Tuesday, the Braves added José Azócar to the major league roster. Azócar, an outfielder, had been with the Braves on their previous road trip and appeared in two games before he was designated for assignment May 6.
The addition of Azócar might signify star right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. will continue to miss time. Acuña was placed on the 10-day injured list May 3 with a strained left hamstring, and although he was doing some light workouts in Los Angeles over the weekend, Braves manager Walt Weiss did not sound confident he would return soon.
“I think he’s doing well, but it’s still gonna be a little time,” Weiss said. “He’s progressing very well. I saw him out there doing the drills and looks good, but it’s a big leap from doing the little agility drills and then having to run full speed. He’s got some boxes to check yet.”
To make room for Azócar, Braves infielder Jim Jarvis was optioned to Gwinnett on Tuesday.
