A man was arrested and charged with murder Tuesday, nearly a week after multiple shots were fired into a DeKalb County home where several boys were having a sleepover, officials said.
A 13-year-old boy, a 45-year-old man and a dog were killed.
Keyshun Webb, 21, is now facing two counts of murder, several counts of aggravated assault with a weapon and one count of animal cruelty, the DeKalb sheriff’s office said. He was booked into the DeKalb jail after being taken into custody in Hampton, more than 20 miles south of the shooting site, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and Clayton County police, authorities added.
According to an arrest warrant, more than 40 rounds were fired into a Rockcliff Road home around 4 a.m. on July 2. The area is south of I-20 in the Gresham Park community.
Several hours later, the victims were identified as 13-year-old Demarcus Shirley and 45-year-old Chauncey Newman. Authorities said no other individuals inside the home, aside from the dog killed, were injured.
DeKalb police tied Webb to the shooting in some part through video. His warrant states officers obtained footage of another drive-by shooting at a different location on the same day showing four men in two vehicles.
Police spokesperson Blaine Clark said that shooting left a woman injured in the 4300 block of Wyndham Park Circle around 4:30 a.m. after multiple gunshots were fired into a residence. Webb is facing additional charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in that shooting, Clark said.
Officials said in the warrant that shell casings collected at both scenes, which are roughly 9 miles apart, matched.
Police didn’t offer a motive in the Rockcliff Road shooting, but said in the warrant that gang involvement is “likely” and Webb is one of four suspects involved.
“The investigation remains ongoing. I do not have any additional details on the shooting at this point, so I’m unable to speak to anyone else’s involvement or the motive for the crime,” Clark told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I also can’t speak to whether either victim in the double homicide was an intended target.”
DeKalb Sheriff Melody Maddox said in a written statement that the agency is committed to locating people accused of violent crimes.
“I commend the dedication and professionalism of everyone involved in safely locating this suspect and continuing our mission to seek justice for victims and their families,” Maddox said.
